WORLD
HEALTH ORGANIZATION
The World Health Organization is the United Nations specialized agency for
health. It was established on 7 April 1948. WHO's
objective, as set out in its Constitution, is the attainment by all peoples
of the highest possible level of health. Health is defined in WHO's Constitution as a state of complete physical,
mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or
infirmity.
WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION,
REGIONAL
OFFICE FOR THE WESTERN PACIFIC
The Western Pacific Region, one of the six regions of the World Health
Organization, is home to approximately 1.6 billion people in Asia and Pacific. There are various developments on Healthy Cities
and Healthy Islands in this region since later
1980s. WHO/WPRO has worked with local and national partners by setting up
models and demonstration sites, deriving and disseminating best practices,
evaluating healthy settings, and developing technical guidelines on healthy
cities and healthy settings programmes.
Healthy Settings,
WHO
Healthy Settings, the settings-based approaches to health promotion,
involve a holistic and multi-disciplinary method which integrates action
across risk factors. The goal is to maximize disease prevention via a
"whole system" approach. The settings approach has roots in the
WHO Health for All strategy and, more specifically, the Ottawa Charter for
Health Promotion. Healthy Settings key principles include community
participation, partnership, empowerment and equity.
